What to write in a sympathy card

12 lines you can use as they are. Change a word so it sounds like you — a borrowed sentence in your own handwriting still reads as yours.

Le righe
  • I'm so sorry. There's nothing to say and I'm not going to try.
  • Thinking of you this week.
  • I heard about your mother. I'm sorry, Dana.
  • No reply needed. I just didn't want to say nothing.
  • I'm going to call Sunday. Don't pick up if you don't want to.
  • I keep thinking about the way he laughed at his own jokes before the end of them.
  • I'm bringing food Thursday and leaving it on the step. No door, no visit.
  • She was funny and she was hard to argue with and I liked her enormously.
  • I don't know what you need. I'm going to keep showing up until you tell me to stop.
  • Forty-one years is a long time to be married to somebody. I'm so sorry.
  • You don't have to write back to this or to anyone.
  • He talked about you constantly. I want you to know that.

If you only remember one thing

Short and specific beats long and general. “I still think about you driving me to the airport at five in the morning” does more work than three sentences of sympathy, because only you could have written it.
