What to write in a hostess card

12 lines you can use as they are. Change a word so it sounds like you — a borrowed sentence in your own handwriting still reads as yours.

Le righe
  • For tomorrow, with coffee, once we've all gone home.
  • You said not to bring anything. I brought this instead of arguing.
  • Thank you for the table and the chairs and the nine plates.
  • Don't open this tonight. It's for the quiet part.
  • For the morning after cooking for eleven people.
  • You feed us constantly. Occasionally something should come the other way.
  • Not for the party. For Sunday.
  • Thank you for having us. The lamb was better than last time and last time was good.
  • You made it look easy, which I know took two days.
  • For the guest room we didn't deserve.
  • Nothing to plate, nothing to return, nothing to water.
  • Thank you. Next one's at ours, and it will be worse.

If you only remember one thing

Short and specific beats long and general. “I still think about you driving me to the airport at five in the morning” does more work than three sentences of sympathy, because only you could have written it.
