Retirement

Why the plaque is not the gift, what the first empty Monday feels like, and how to time something for week three.

Someone is leaving after 22 years, or 31. There is a party in a conference room with a cake and a card that has been going around the office in a manila envelope for a week. You have signed the card. You want to give something separately because this person trained you, or covered for you in 2019, and "best wishes" in a shared card is not it.

What is appropriate, and what is not

The party is not the hard part. The third Monday is. The retirement literature is consistent on this — the first two weeks feel like vacation, and somewhere around week three the absence of structure lands. Almost every gift arrives on the last day. Almost nothing arrives after.

Retirement gifts fail when they are about the job. A crystal award engraved with a company logo is a reminder of the thing that just ended, and it goes in a box in the garage within a year. Something for the life that starts next is better, and food that shows up at a house is squarely in that category.

Do not joke about golf, naps, or being old unless you have the standing to do it and know they find it funny. A surprising number of people retire because of a health event or a layoff dressed as a retirement, and the jokes land differently then.

Say what they did. Most people leave a job without ever being told plainly what they were good at. A card that names one specific thing — a decision they made, a person they trained — outperforms every object on the table.

What to send

$15–25 One tin and a letter, sent to the home address. The letter is the gift. The tin is why the envelope is thick enough that they open it standing at the kitchen counter instead of putting it on the hall table with the mail.
$30–45 A mixed box of four to six, timed to land three weeks after the last day. The delay is the whole idea. It arrives when the calls have stopped and the house is quiet on a Tuesday afternoon, which is when people say the retirement actually started.
$50–75 A box plus coffee, from five or six colleagues who each write a paragraph. Pooled, it costs each person about ten dollars and produces a package with six paragraphs in it. The paragraphs are what gets kept and reread; the box is what gets opened in front of a spouse.
Se preferisci cuocere

If you'd rather bake it: plain almond, and spend the hour you saved on the letter. /ricette/. A paragraph naming one decision they made in 2018 will outlast anything that was on the conference room table, and nobody else at that party is going to write one.

Timing

Send it after the last day, not before. Everything else arrives on the last day, and a box in the pile at a party gets attention for eleven seconds. Two to four weeks out, delivered to the home, is the window nobody uses. If there is a party and you want something in hand for it, bring the card there and ship the box later — that gives you two contacts instead of one. Set a calendar reminder for three weeks after the party and order four days before that date.
