Your manager did something that mattered. She went to bat for your promotion, or covered while your mother was sick, or simply did not make a hard quarter worse. It is December, or it is her last day, or it is nothing in particular. You want to acknowledge it and you are aware that the whole thing can read as currying favor in front of six other people who did not send anything.
What is appropriate, and what is not
Etiquette on gifts in a workplace runs downward, not up. A manager giving to a team is normal. An individual giving to a manager can put pressure on peers who now feel obliged, and it can put the manager in an awkward spot if they are running a performance cycle. If you send anything upward, keep it small enough that it cannot be read as an investment.
A group gift removes the whole problem. Five people, $10 each, one card everyone signs. Nobody is exposed, nothing needs to be declared, and the manager can accept it without wondering what it means. Organize it privately and do not pressure anyone who says no.
Timing changes the reading completely. A gift two weeks before reviews looks like a bid. The same gift the week after a project ships, or after they have left the company, looks like gratitude. If you are in a review window, wait.
Never make it personal in style. Nothing worn, nothing scented, nothing that implies you know their home. Food is the safest category available and shared food is safer still.
What to send
If you'd rather bake it: pizzelle, and bring enough for the room. /ricette/. Homemade from one person to a manager can read as unusually personal; the same thing brought for everyone reads as normal, and she still knows who made it.
What to write
- You backed me in the March meeting when it would have been easier not to. Thank you.
- From all of us. You made a bad quarter survivable and we noticed.
- Thank you for covering while my mom was in the hospital. I won't forget it.
- Nothing attached to this. Just a good year of work.
- You're the first manager I've had who said what they actually meant. Good luck at the new place.

Timing
Avoid the two weeks before performance reviews and the two weeks before promotion decisions. The safest moments are the week a project closes, mid-January when nothing else is landing, or a departure. If it is a group gift, collect the money by direct message rather than a group thread so anyone can quietly decline. Ship to the office for a Tuesday through Thursday arrival, and if the team is hybrid, check which day the manager is in the building before you pick a date.
This page names no brand and earns nothing from what you decide. The bakeries that ship are listed alphabetically by state; our method is here, including what we would have to disclose if that ever changed.
