You and your college roommate have been trading voice memos with four-day gaps for two years. She has moved twice. You have not seen her since a wedding in 2023. The friendship is real and it is running on maintenance mode, and you are aware that maintenance mode is how friendships end — not in a fight, but by nobody being the one to send the next thing.
What is appropriate, and what is not
Send it on no occasion. A birthday gift is expected and gets filed with the other birthday gifts. Something arriving on the second Tuesday in March for no reason is the one people photograph and send back to you, because it proves you thought about them when there was no prompt.
Do not send anything that requires a reciprocal shipment. The moment it becomes a gift exchange, both of you have a task, and tasks are what killed the correspondence in the first place. Say explicitly in the note that nothing is expected back.
Shelf-stable matters more here than for a local gift. You do not know their week. Something that keeps for weeks in a sealed tin survives a work trip, a sick kid, and four days of an unchecked porch, and it means you do not have to coordinate a delivery window across time zones.
Follow it with a phone call, not a text. The gift is the excuse to schedule the call, which is the actual thing you want. Propose a specific time in their time zone rather than asking when is good.
What to send
If you'd rather bake it: almond cantucci. Twice-baked is close to the only cookie that survives four days in a box without arriving as gravel — soft amaretti and glazed lemon do not. Pack them upright with parchment between the layers. /ricette/.
What to write
- No occasion. I just thought about you on a Tuesday and wanted you to know it.
- Nothing back, please. I refuse to turn this into a system.
- You told me about a bakery in Palermo for an hour in 2019. I remembered.
- Free Thursday at 7 your time? I'll call. Don't send me anything.
- Four time zones and I still tell your stories as if they're mine.

Timing
Any random week. Deliberately avoid their birthday and December, because a no-occasion box in the middle of February is doing something a seasonal one cannot. If they travel for work, ask which week they are home rather than guessing — shelf-stable food is fine on a porch for nine days, but the person is not there for the moment. /regali/ lists which bakeries ship to which states, and a few will not ship east in August at all, because the chocolate does not survive the truck.
This page names no brand and earns nothing from what you decide. The bakeries that ship are listed alphabetically by state; our method is here, including what we would have to disclose if that ever changed.
