Housewarming

The difference between a first-apartment housewarming and a fourth house, and why nothing decorative is safe.

They bought a house, or signed a lease on a place with a second bedroom, and the party is in three weeks. You have been told not to bring anything and you have seen the registry, which is a link to a store selling $90 serving boards. You do not know their taste well enough to buy an object that will live on a wall, and you do not want to be the reason they have to display something.

What is appropriate, and what is not

Consumables outperform objects at a housewarming for one reason: the recipient does not have to decide where it goes. Someone six days into a new house has made four hundred decisions about where things go and has no appetite for another. A candle in a scent they did not choose is a decision. A box of food is not.

The old rule was salt, bread, and a coin, which survives because all three get used up. Modern versions of it work the same way. Anything that has to be hung, framed, matched, or dusted is a gift with a maintenance cost attached.

Scale to the move. A first apartment at 24 and a fourth house at 52 are not the same event. The 24-year-old needs things. The 52-year-old has everything and is downsizing, and the correct gift there is smaller and consumable, not larger.

Do not bring anything requiring a corkscrew, a vase, or a plate at the party itself. Their kitchen is not unpacked and the glasses are in a box in the hall.

What to send

$15–25 One wrapped box, or two tins, handed over at the party. Correct for an evening where twenty people are each bringing something. It goes on the counter, it needs no vase, and it is still there Tuesday when the house is empty again and they have not shopped.
$30–45 A mixed box of four to six for a first purchase rather than a rental. A first house is a bigger event than a move and people remember what showed up for it. Four flavors also handles the parents and in-laws who are standing around that house for most of the first month.
$50–75 A box plus coffee, shipped to arrive during move-in week rather than carried to the party. Move-in week has no groceries in it, and the coffee maker is the first thing unpacked and the last thing filled. The party is six weeks later, by which point the house works and nothing you bring is needed.
Se preferisci cuocere

If you'd rather bake it: double chocolate, in a tin you do not want back. /ricette/. Say the tin is theirs. A container that has to be returned is an errand attached to a gift, and it will sit in the back of their cupboard for a year while they feel bad about it.

Timing

Two windows. Move-in week, which is when the house has nothing in it, or the party, which is often six to eight weeks later. The move-in week delivery is more useful and far less common. If you are shipping, confirm they are actually at the new address first — mail forwarding lags a move by one to two weeks and boxes go to the old place. For a party you are attending, bring it in hand and say it is for later.
