No Occasion At All

The single most effective gift there is, and the reason almost nobody sends it.

Nobody is getting married, sick, promoted, or buried. You just thought about your mother on a Wednesday, or about the friend who got you through 2021, and the thought arrived with nothing attached to it. There is no date to hang it on, which is exactly why you will probably not act on it, and why the three previous times you had this thought nothing happened.

What is appropriate, and what is not

The absence of an occasion is the entire mechanism. A birthday gift is evidence you own a calendar. A box arriving on the second Thursday in March is evidence you were thinking about a person while nothing was prompting you, and that is a different piece of information about a relationship.

Say plainly in the note that there is no occasion. Otherwise the recipient spends ten minutes checking whether they have forgotten an anniversary, which is a small anxiety you have caused for no reason. One sentence — no occasion, nothing needed back — removes it.

Keep it small. A large no-occasion gift implies something is coming, and the recipient will look for the ask. Under $40 keeps the gesture legible as a gesture.

Do not do it on a schedule. The moment this becomes a quarterly habit both of you track, it is an obligation with a due date, and it stops doing the thing it was doing.

What to send

$15–25 One or two tins picked because of something specific about the person. Orange and chocolate for the one who orders an Aperol every time. The choice carries more than the price does, and at this size nobody starts wondering what you want.
$30–45 A mixed box of four to six for a parent or a sibling's household. Large enough to be a real delivery on an ordinary Tuesday, small enough that nobody goes looking for the ask. Parents in particular repeat this one to other people for months.
$50–75 A box you chose flavor by flavor, plus the coffee they actually drink. Reserve it for the relationship where you would get every flavor right. Anywhere else this size implies something is coming, and they will wait for it instead of eating the cookies.
Se preferisci cuocere

If you'd rather bake it: amaretti — one bowl, egg whites and almond flour, about an hour. /ricette/. A jar of homemade cookies with no occasion attached is close to impossible to misread, which is why it works on the parent who deflects every gift you have ever sent.

Timing

Any week that is not near a birthday, a holiday, or an anniversary. February, late March, September, and early November are all empty stretches where a delivery has nothing to compete with and nobody is expecting anything. Send it the week you have the thought, because the thought does not survive being scheduled. The shipping list at /regali/ is sorted by state, and sending from a bakery in the town they grew up in costs no more than sending from anywhere else.
